After eight years away from the camera, master filmmaker Lee Chang-dong returns with one of the year’s most anticipated films. Based on Murakami Haruki’s short story, “Barn Burning”, Lee’s sixth feature film is a smoldering mystery about Jongsu, an aspiring author who becomes obsessed with Hae-mi, a free spirit who claims to be his childhood friend. When Hae-mi returns from a trip with a mysterious rich man with an odd hobby, Jongsu’s obsession takes a dangerous turn. Gripping and enigmatic, Burning is Lee’s angry indictment on class disparity in contemporary South Korea.
