Mag Hsu, the award-winning writer behind multiple hit television series, makes her big-screen directorial debut with this crowdpleasing melodramedy, the winner of four awards at this year’s Taipei Film Festival. When a professor dies, his wife, Sanlian, is incensed to discover that his insurance beneficiary is Jay, his male lover. Things get even messier when Sanlian’s son moves into Jay’s home. Hsu’s script dissects a messy web of relationships with a delicate balance of humor and pathos. Meanwhile, music video director Kidding Hsu uses a vivid color palate and creative visual flourishes such as animation to paint Taipei in a unique light.
