Ratna comes from humble roots but is full of hope, and wishes to rise above her lower class status to become a fashion designer. But Ratna works as a low-pay domestic worker for the privileged and disaffected Ashwin. Improbably, the two find an affinity and grow closer, but an invisible and dehumanizing wall created by society looms large between them. Writer-director Rohena Gera shines a light on a real social issue in India: a degrading class system navigated by millions of domestic workers toiling without government protections – some even without basic human respect. In this problematic modern setting, Gera crafts an uncommon Cinderella story with intelligence, warmth and heart.
