With inserts of live-action footage, this Latvian-Norwegian coproduction is an autobiographical animated documentary and a powerful anti-war statement based on director Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen’s own childhood in Soviet-era Latvia. On discovering the remains of a German soldier in her sandbox, the heroine wonders what is buried beneath state propaganda, and sets off on a voyage of discovery.
