To mark the 40th anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising, director and Gwangju native Lee Jo-hoon originally planned on making a documentary about the “Gwangju Video” – a compilation of foreign news footage that was secretly produced and distributed to spread the truth about the Korean military regime’s brutal crackdown on democracy protests in May 1980. However, in the course of making the film, Lee discovered that four hours were missing from archival records.
