Small-time con man Chao Jen-Chieh often impersonates a Shaolin fighter to the distress of his elder brother. Standing up for a group of exploited workers, Chao is determined to seek real training at the Shaolin temple from head monk San De. Strict in accepting disciples, San De assigns him to build bamboo scaffoldings instead. This allows Chao to gradually acquire kung fu skills by observing others in training and manoeuvring bamboo poles. He is finally able to defeat the thugs and is known as the Shaolin Scaffolding Master.
