Synopsis
Arguably the most ambitious project to-date from Max Richter, Sleep is a concept album based around the neuroscience of sleep, with a runtime of over eight hours.Sleep was performed in its entirety as one compositional piece at the Reading Room at Wellcome Collection in London, England, on September 27, 2015 from midnight to 8:00 AM as the climax of the BBC Radio 3 "Science and Music" weekend.
The performance broke several records, including the longest live broadcast of a single piece of music in BBC Radio 3's history. The performance also set Guinness World Records for the longest broadcast of a single piece of music and the longest live broadcast of a single piece of music.
Instead of chairs to sit in while watching the performance, audience members were given beds to lie down in.
Natalie Johns' documentary MAX RICHTER’S SLEEP explores our symbiotic relationship with nature and our experiences, both conscious and in dreams, by tracing the evolution of Sleep in its concept and production.
