Synopsis
Maggie Cheung’s hustler from Guangzhou moves to Hong Kong determined to get rich. Leon Lai’s rube from Tianjin migrates to Hong Kong to earn enough money to marry the girl back home. When the two immigrants meet by chance, they strike up an alliance that grows into friendship, and then friendship becomes something much more fun and complicated. Peter Chan’s epic 1996 romantic comedy ‘Comrades: Almost a Love Story’ depicts a cosmopolitan Hong Kong full of romantic potential for working people. ‘Comrades: Almost a Love Story’ is a selection of the bc X HKU Film Club, a joint programme bringing together Cinematheque audiences and University of Hong Kong Masters-degree students in Literary and Cultural Studies. Film Club screenings are followed by discussions facilitated by filmmaker Kate Reilly. Those conversations are open to all audience members and take place in the 1/F foyer.
